I wish people would realize that animals are totally dependent on us, helpless, like children, a trust that is put upon us.

The trip we made this time was around Christmas.  By the time we arrived at the farmhouse my in-laws owned at the time, it was dark. We walked the dogs around briefly, hoping all their business would be attended to, and then we went into the house. As soon as you entered the house through the back door, there was a sunroom, directly opposite the entrance way. This was not a year-round room, so Bret’s mom used it as a place to store some prepared food she had no room for in the refrigerator.

We were all hugging and saying our hellos when I saw Nettie head straight through the door into the sunroom. I quickly followed, only to find her face buried in a cherry cheesecake. I pulled her head out of the cheesecake, which she really didn’t mind because her entire muzzle was filled with it, and she was still enjoying her unexpected treat.

As I pulled her out of the sunroom into the living room, I caught sight of Katy pooping on the living room rug!  I let go of Nettie to get some paper towels. Suddenly two cats ran by, with Nettie, Katy, and Bailey in hot pursuit. Bret’s father, Bret, and I started following, Bret grabbed Nettie, I grabbed Katy, and Bailey just stopped, not really knowing what she was chasing. Bret’s father got to one of the cats and picked it up to put it outside. By the time he arrived at the back door, the cat had bitten him and literally shredded the sleeve and the front of his shirt.

This entire fiasco took place in less than five minutes. I would never believe this story if I hadn’t lived it.

If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans.
